The Vocabulary Vault is an online glossary compiled by the class for the class. What this means is that each and every one of you is required to edit this page at least once a week and add two words that you've encountered over the course of the week.

Word Choice: These words can be from in-class readings, homework, independent reading, the internet, or anywhere else you find an interesting word. The words you choose should be practical, so don't pick one out of the dictionary that you'll never, ever want to use in real life. In fact, don't pick one out of the dictionary at all. All words must be found in context (that is, in a piece of text that you either see or hear). They must also be appropriate: no profanity or synonyms/euphemisms for profanity. No online jargon (1337, txt, etc.) will be accepted, but other forms of slang (blog, mcjob, staycation) will be allowed provided you include in the definition the reason the word is gaining in popularity or the source of the word.

What to Include: Each submission to the vocabulary vault must include the following:
  1. The word, correctly spelled.
  2. The part of speech
  3. correct pronunciation (spell phonetically) with accented syllable in bold
  4. A definition (in your own words!) of the word including not only the way you saw it used but also any other possible definitions.
  5. The context in which you found the word: the name of the publication and the sentence in which the word was used.
  6. A 1-sentence blurb explaining why you think the word is important/useful. Why is it worthy of being included in the Vocabulary Vault?

Example:
Succession: noun. [suhk-sesh-uhn]
a) people or things that follow each other in order or sequence
b) the order in which people succeed to (claim) a title

Context: "For instance, what is the line of succession and how does it work?" (from http://goo.gl/lOUR4)

I think this term is relevant because the upcoming wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton has brought the British monarchy (who's in it and how it works) to public attention.
